She can handle any style, and her unique approach makes each style her own. Her voice is marvelous and her phrasing impeccable, and she hits every note dead-on. There&#8217;s no &#8220;hunting,&#8221; yet she can &#8220;bend&#8221; her voice for effect as necessary.If her singing weren&#8217;t enough, King is backed by as tasty and swinging a quartet as you&#8217;ll ever hear: Bill Anschell on piano; Jeff Johnson on Bass; Craig Flory on sax, bass clarinet and flute; and D&#8217;Vonne Lewis on drums.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #333399;\"><b><i>&#8220;One for My Baby&#8221;<\/i><\/b><\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/kk_one_for_my_baby.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-104\" alt=\"kk_one_for_my_baby\" src=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/kk_one_for_my_baby.jpg\" width=\"125\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All too often, talented singers have been sabotaged by\u00a0clueless A&amp;R people &#8212; if the singer isn&#8217;t saddled with incompetent musicians, he or she is given inappropriate songs to work with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But\u00a0<i>One for My Baby<\/i>\u00a0is just the opposite; in fact, this CD is an example of intelligent, thoughtful A&amp;R and the right decisions being made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Katie King is accompanied by competent Seattle jazzmen, and all of the songs chosen are appropriate for her. One of King&#8217;s strong points is sassy, playful blues, and Z.Z. Hill&#8217;s &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/08-steppin-out.mp3\">Steppin&#8217; Out<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8216;,&#8221; Bessie Smith&#8217;s<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/12-good-ol-waggon.mp3\">Good O&#8217; Wagon<\/a>&#8221; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and Louis Jordan&#8217;s<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/04-early-in-Morning.mp3\">Early in the Morning<\/a>&#8221; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">are perfect choices<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another major asset is King&#8217;s sultry, bluesy way with ballads and torch songs, and sh<\/span>e<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> couldn&#8217;t have had more appropriate vehicles than<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/10-everything-happens-to-me.mp3\">Everything Happens to Me<\/a>&#8221; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/13-One-for-my-Baby.mp3\">One for My Baby<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, there&#8217;s King&#8217;s need for the occasional fast-tempo bop swinger, and<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/02-Love-Come-Back.mp3\">Love Come Back to Me<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/07-Im-old-fashioned.mp3\">I&#8217;m Old Fashioned<\/a>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> fill that need nicely. This tricky task is what Katie King and her musical cohorts have successfully accomplished on\u00a0<i>Jazz Figures<\/i>.Most of the music was composed by Wayne Shorter. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">King&#8217;s style is characterized with subtlety and grace. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/06-Timeless-Moments-Nefertiti.mp3\">Timeless Moments (Nefertiti)<\/a>&#8221; is languidly delivered creating a picture of an attractive woman lounging in a diaphanous gown, drinking Southern Comfort and reminiscing of past good times that are not likely to pass this way again. Talented multi-instrumentalist Jay Thomas, as he has done on other of her albums, provides the perfect foil for King. Listen to his soprano, appropriately, on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/04-I-Need-Rest-Impressions.mp3\">I Need Rest (Impressions)<\/a>&#8221; built on John Coltrane&#8217;s &#8220;Impressions&#8221; and his shimmering Miles Davis muted trumpet on &#8220;Follow the Footsteps.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The work of Thomas and King alone are reason enough to justify this recording. The rhythm section of Seattle- based musicians Bob Nixon, Jeff Johnson and Steven Bentley are very supportive. As its title suggests, this CD emphasizes ballads but doesn&#8217;t exclude comfortable medium tempos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Seattle-based vocalist was going for a dusky, torchy jazz-noir ambiance, and the well known standards she chooses (which include &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/04-Youre-My-Thrill.mp3\">You&#8217;re My Thrill<\/a>,&#8221; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">is given a likable Afro-Cuban makeover, and equally appealing is King&#8217;s sparse version of Mongo Santamaria&#8217;s<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/katiekingsings.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/03-Afro-Blue.mp3\">Afro Blue<\/a>.&#8221;<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A satisfying&#8230;
